Lower rates for Far East trade

Freight rates for container shipping from the Far East to Europe have fallen due to reduced demand, according to the French analyst Alphaliner. In an attempt to maintain freight rates, shipping companies have cut back capacity by cancelling sailings from September 24 to October 8.
Since 17 September, rates dropped from USD 1,690 per TEU to about USD 1,500, the lowest level since December last year, according to Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI). Alphaliner says that prices could fall still further.
